Intent
The intention of our Design and Technology curriculum is to encourage children to foster a questioning approach to designing and making as well as developing their curiosity about how different technologies are used and how things work. An adaptive curriculum with a focus on pupil experience that will prepare them for the next stage of their education and beyond; mindful of how the world of work is changing and the knowledge and skills they will benefit from developing. A curriculum where they make, measure, cut, sew, fix, build, grow and evaluate. A curriculum where children will anticipate problems, imagine solutions, evaluate, adjust and problem solve as they go. In addition to the design and creation of products, children will also learn about and have the experience of designing and creating nutritious foods. They will learn about the importance of a balanced diet and begin to understand how different foods are produced and understand about these processes.
Our curriculum design ensures that through adapting the curriculum all children take part in many focused practical tasks in which they develop skills and knowledge through a topic framework from EYFS to the end of KS2. The children are given the opportunity to work with construction kits, simple mechanisms and a wide selection of materials, tools and techniques. Children are encouraged to follow a design process; through discussion and research, designing and making, evaluating and modifying their work, both individually and in small groups.
